What information will I find in the Record?
The HER includes a basic database of 25,000 archaeological records, including archaeological sites, buried remains, chance finds, excavations, significant landscape areas, buildings and standing monuments. This database is constantly updated and provides information on each site, including type of site, grid reference, period, designated status and community. Through the Extended National Database partnership core data from other archaeological records (Cadw, National Monuments Record, National Museum Wales and other Archaeological Trusts) can be accessed. In all over 25,000 records can be seen.
These records can be interrogated through a geographical information system and are supported by a collection of over 7,000 paper files containing more detailed information on particular sites including excavation and assessment reports, documents, plans, maps and photographs.
We also hold a small reference library of material relevant to the archaeology of Glamorgan and Gwent, which is available for consultation by HER users.
