Stewardship Officer: Permanent.

Salary: £30,600 pa. 35 hours a week.

Location: South Wales

The Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust is a charitable company that undertakes advisory, archaeological and public education works for a wide range of organisations (see www.ggat.org.uk). The Trust is a Registered Organisation with the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists.

We are looking for an experienced archaeologist to join our Advisory Services team, whose work is particularly supported by Welsh Government through Cadw and by the twelve Unitary Authorities in South Wales.


The position:

As one of our Stewardship Officers you will play a key role in ensuring the effective management, investigation, understanding, and promotion of the historic environment in South Wales.


The role involves working at both strategic and case work levels and working with a wide range of bodies and persons. You will need to be able to respond to consultations on proposed legislation, regulation, and guidance, and to provide inputs into strategic plans in order to ensure that where necessary these contain appropriate measures to allow the effective future management of the historic environment. This can include assistance with the development of policy and procedures.


At a casework level you will provide advice to bodies with oversight for permitting development whether within or outside of the land-use planning regime including bodies with their own permissive regimes on the impact of proposed land-use on the historic environment. Where development proceeds you will ensure that archaeological mitigation proposals meet current professional standards and are delivered to approved schemes, and in doing this monitor fieldwork and review and approve reports and other outcomes.


More generally, the role will also involve providing advice to academic and other researchers, community groups and others wishing to carry out research or other investigations of the historic environment.


The post holder:

You will be a Member (MCIfA accredited) of the Chartered Institute of Archaeologists and therefore have the attested competencies of such professional accreditation.


Whilst you may have a background of working in an archaeological advisory or consulting capacity, experience in archaeological practice or educational role would also be relevant.


You must be able to work under multiple pressures and have clarity in communication. You will need to be able to be consistent in decision-making often in different contexts and justify your determinations.


You will need have a good working knowledge of MS Office and GIS software applications and must have a clean driving licence. A knowledge and appreciation of Welsh Language and Culture is desirable but not essential.
