Overseas Students Work Experience

Heidi Richards

I can honestly say that my time at GGAT was one of the most valuable experiences of my life. I knew that I wanted to go into archaeology as a profession, but I had no idea there was such a wide range of archaeological careers. By interning at GGAT, I was able to get a glimpse into the lives of archaeologists in different fields, and see what it was like to actually be an archaeologist.

Working with Charina Jones the Historic Environment Manager, I spent a fair amount of time looking through records of Early Medieval Ecclesiastical sites and make sure they didn't contradict the information in the historic environmental record (HER). I learned so much about medieval religious sites throughout southeast Wales. It was fascinating to learn many archaeological terms and see how research was conducted on a professional level.

I was also privileged to visit different types of sites and witness different phases of archaeology being carried out. These activities included planning an excavation, conducting a field survey, conserving a historic building, and excavating a prehistoric wooden track. I also enjoyed visiting a few castles and cleaning and recording artifacts from a nearby Roman site.

The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. Not only did they make sure I felt comfortable and welcome, they made sure I got the most out my experience at an educational level as well. They took every opportunity to take me places and show me things that would enhance my knowledge of archaeology and the history of different sites.

I greatly appreciate all of the valuable knowledge and opportunities I was given while at GGAT. After completing my internship, I feel much more prepared and inspired to enter the field of archaeology as a profession.
