Gwynedd Archaeological Trust was formed in 1974 as an educational charity to inform the public on archaeological matters, to respond to increasing threats to the archaeology of the area, and to educate in the broadest sense. Archwilio is the online access system to the Historic Environment Records (HERs) of Wales. The system has been developed through a partnership of the four Welsh Archaeological Trusts to provide wider public access to this valuable resource. www.archwilio.org.uk
Cadw are responsible for the protection of the historic environment of Wales. This includes historic buildings, ancient monuments, historic parks, gardens and landscapes, and underwater archaeology. Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales is the investigating body and national archive for the historic environment of Wales. Coflein is the online database for the National Monuments Record of Wales (NMRW) held by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales. Coflein allows access to details of many thousands of archaeological sites, monuments, buildings and maritime sites in Wales. www.coflein.gov.uk
The Shorewatch project brings together individuals and groups from local communities to save information about Scotland's precious archaeological sites before they are lost to erosion. www.shorewatch.co.uk
Thames Discovery Programme aims to communicate an understanding and informed enjoyment of the historic Thames to the widest possible audience. This ambitious project is hosted by the Thames Estuary Partnership, in the UCL Environment Institute, and the Thames Explorer Trust with generous support from Heritage Lottery Funding. The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a voluntary scheme to record archaeological objects found by members of the public in England and Wales. Every year many thousands of objects are discovered, many of these by metal-detector users, but also by people whilst out walking, gardening or going about their daily work.
