Mr Neil Maylan, Archaeological Planning Manager

After graduating from King Alfred's College Winchester Neil worked for Northamptonshire Archaeology and Wessex Archaeology before joining the Trust in 1985. He directed excavations in Caerleon, Chepstow, Monmouth, Newport and Usk before moving to the then Development Control Section in 1992.

As Archaeological Planning Manager Neil is responsible for ensuring that an effective service is provided to the Local Planning Authorities in Southeast Wales and provides advice on large and complex development proposals. He is heavily involved with the development of Local Development Plans for each Authority and in the Strategic Environmental Assessment process.

His research interests are in Urban Archaeology, especially during the medieval period and planning and heritage law. Outside the Trust Neil is heavily involved with field hockey, being Chairman of the Welsh Hockey Union South Region, an active umpire and a tournament official of the European Hockey Federation.

Mrs Judith Doyle, Archaeological Planning Officer

Judith has worked in the Archaeological Planning department of GGAT since 1995, having previously worked as a field archaeologist since the early 1980s, both for GGAT and other organisations in England and Wales.

Judith graduated form Cardiff University with honours in archaeology; the course included pre-historic, Roman and medieval studies and also related to the early history of Wales.

Archaeological interests include the Gower peninsula, and its palimpsest of landscapes and the development of woodland management with its fragile evidence.

Outside work, interests include walking, kayaking and swimming. Judith is a Christian and worships in Swansea, and has interests in Celtic Spirituality.

Miss Claudine Gerrard, Archaeological Planning Officer

Claudine graduated from Bournemouth University with an honours degree in archaeology; the course at Bournemouth included multi-period studies (prehistoric to modern), and a strong focus on developing practical field skills.

Claudine began working for the Trust in 2005 in the Projects division, having previously worked as a field archaeologist in various corners of England, Scotland and the Isle of Man. Claudine began working as an Archaeological Planning Officer in 2008.

Her area of archaeological interest includes heritage and archaeological planning law in relation to modern communities, and she has recently begun a programme of research in collaboration with the Herculaneum Conservation Project and the British School in Rome addressing issues facing modern communities living with ancient sites in a comparative study of various countries, including Italy and Wales.

Historic Environment Record

Miss Charina Jones, Historic Environment Record Manager

Charina starting working for the Trust as a Project Archaeologist in 2003, following completion of BSc in Archaeology from Cardiff University in 2001 and work at other organisations undertaking geophysical survey and excavation.

During her time in the Projects division Charina was involved with a number of Cadw-funded projects, primarily Historic Landscape Characterisation and the Southeast Wales Industrial Ironworks Landscapes Project. Other work included desk-based assessments, survey and excavation. The geek in her led her to study part-time for an MSc in Geographic Information Systems, which she completed in 2007.

Charina was appointed to her current position as Historic Environment Record Manager in late 2007. She is responsible for managing, maintaining and updating the HER for the 12 Unitary Authorities of Southeast Wales.

Her interests focus on landscape archaeology and 3D modelling, with an emphasis on presentation of the archaeological resource to the public, especially concerning the delivery of information online. She thoroughly enjoys being the Assistant Leader of Caerphilly CBC Young Archaeologists.

Heritage Management & Outreach

Dr Edith Evans, Heritage and Outreach Manager

Edith started working for the Trust in 1980 as an illustrator. The following year she transferred into the fieldwork section becoming involved in the excavations at Cold Knap, Barry, and managing excavation and post-excavation work on Cowbridge and Caerleon. More recently she has been responsible for the Glamorgan and Gwent sections of a number of Cadw-funded survey projects, including Prehistoric Funerary and Ritual Sites, Roman Roads and Vici, Romano-British Lowland Settlement Early Medieval Ecclesiastical Sites and Historic Churches.

Since 2004, she has been Heritage and Outreach Manager, responsible for the services which provide information and outside the planning system to the twelve unitary authorities, environmental bodies, farmers and other landowners under the Tir Gofal scheme and various woodland schemes, and other members of the public, and which make the results of the Trust's work more widely available through talks, displays and interim reports in archaeological journals.

Edith has been a Member of the IFA since 1984. Her main research interests are Roman architecture, Roman food and church archaeology.

Miss Susan Hughes, Heritage Officer

Sue initially came to GGAT in 1996 on a six-week placement as part of her Heritage Conservation/Archaeology degree at Trinity College, Carmarthen. After obtaining the BSc (Hons) degree she began work at the Trust, firstly as a volunteer and then as a Curatorial Assistant gaining experience in all aspects of work carried out in the Sites and Monuments Record, Archaeological Planning and the Heritage and Outreach department of the Trust.

Sue now works as the Heritage Management Officer providing information and advice on the historic environment to the twelve unitary authorities in southeast Wales, national and local organisations, schools and the general public. Sue also coordinates the outreach and events programme for the Trust.

Sue is a Welsh learner and her research interests are the archaeology of Gower and basically everything!

Curatorial Archaeologists

Mr Paul W Huckfield, Curatorial Archaeologist

Paul started working for the Trust as a Site Assistant during his summer breaks whilst still at University. After completing his degree in Archaeology and Prehistory from the University of Wales, Newport in 2004 he worked on a number of excavations for the Trust before joining the Curatorial Division as a Curatorial Archaeologist.

Paul's role is to provide support for each of the three departments within the Curatorial Division, Heritage Management, the Historic Environment Record and Archaeological Planning. He also administers the Tir Gofal Agri-Environment Scheme, carrying out desktop and field surveys of farms entering the scheme. His previous degree in Fine Art is also utilized designing the Trusts' outreach material and managing the Trust's website.

His special interests include monumentality and material culture in British Prehistory as well as a fascination with military remains of the 20th century, for which he is a member of the Twentieth Century Military Structures Group.

Miss Caroline Thomas, Curatorial Archaeologist

Caroline is from South Wales and is particularly interested in the history of Welsh culture and identity. She studied Archaeology at Cardiff University and in 2005 joined the Trust as a Curatorial Archaeologist.

Caroline is experienced in all aspects of Curatorial work but is currently primarily based within the Heritage Management and Outreach division of the Trust. Caroline has a passion for education and community archaeology and enjoys working with the general public and local organisations. She is also responsible for the development of youth activities for the Trust and administers the Better Woodlands for Wales scheme.

Since 2006 Caroline has volunteered as an Assistant Leader for the Bridgend Young Archaeologists Club and in 2007 she set up the Caerphilly CBC Young Archaeologists. Caroline is a keen Welsh learner and enjoys keeping fit, travelling and learning new things!
